Day 1: Salt Crusted and Sea Worthy

Looking to beat the heat during those Indian summer days in the Valley? Spend the afternoon driving out to Sonoma County's nearest beaches in Bodega Bay. The scenic route on Highway 1 has plenty of stops along the way. Grab some salt water taffy at Patrick’s pink and white ocean-side shack, or stop by Mudd and Gold Collective to browse their local oddities and gifts. Our team loves to make reservations for lunch with Hog Island Oyster Company at their Boat Oyster Bar overlooking the ocean, where you can enjoy their world-class briny oysters, small plates inspired by local ingredients, and a selection of wines and beers that pair beautifully with the food AND the view. Once you’ve had your fill, drive a few more miles down the Shoreline Coast to Salmon Creek Beach, where you can set up camp underneath a driftwood teepee and wade in the warm tributaries that run along the shoreline! The coastal appeal of these hidden gems in Sonoma County provides a refreshing contrast to the vineyard experiences most visitors expect, making for a perfectly balanced day trip that showcases the region's diverse landscapes.

Day 2: Family Fun

Santa Rosa is home to the beloved Peanuts author Charles Schultz, which speaks to the family-centered culture of the area. One of our favorite things to do on the includes a late morning trip to Zoftig Eatery, a local culinary treasure established by husband-and-wife team Matt and Sonjia Spector. Their carefully curated menu features incredible sandwiches, salads, wraps and bowls made with locally-sourced ingredients from purveyors like Acme Bread Co., Stemple Creek Ranch, and Straus Family Creamery.

Alternatively, for a taste of authentic French culinary tradition, stop by Goguette Bread, founded by passionate artisan baker Nas Salamati and clinical dietitian Najine Shariat. Our team loves the simplicity of their Parisian sandwich made with their signature long-fermented, 100% levain baguette filled with Jambon de Paris and salted Normandy butter. This simple yet perfect creation makes for an perfect picnic lunch. Complete your French experience with a pint of their Goguette Glacée, a rich French custard ice cream that captures the authentic flavors Najine remembers from growing up in Paris.

Once you’ve grabbed your picnic fare, head over to Howarth Park and Spring Lake, where kids from 2 to 92 can spend the day riding the historic little train, ponies, and merry-go-round, or simply take a hike around beautiful Spring Lake with a few fishing poles and sunflower seeds to feed the geese. Our team mentions that if you visit late summer, to make sure you bring a few bags or bowls to harvest some of the wild blackberries that grow abundantly along the paved trails!

Sonoma County's family-friendly attractions extend beyond the well-known destinations, with these hidden gems offering authentic local experiences that both children and adults can appreciate. The combination of outdoor recreation, historical significance, and culinary delights makes these spots perfect additions to any family's day trip itinerary in the region.

Day 3: A Hippie Harvest

One of the most beautiful times of year in the valley is Harvest season. The weather is still warm and inviting, but the leaves begin to turn and the fog rolls in early mornings. A favorite way to spend a fall weekend is to take a drive down the Bohemian Highway from Santa Rosa to the little river town of Monte Rio, where you can enjoy the incredible scenery and stop at any number of cool, quirky, local joints along the way.

We love to begin the morning with a stop at Wild Flour Bread where they feature brick-oven baked sourdough breads, scones and coffee. Their fougasse cheese breads made with ingredients like local shiitakes, gouda and caramelized onions, or one of their sweet scones spiced with cardamom and marzipan are some of the team's favorites! They also have a secret little on-site garden you can explore which makes it even more special. Once you’re done there, make sure to stop by Bohemian Flowers Farmstand where you can peruse their beautiful selection of fresh and dried flowers, or grab some of their sun-ripened produce. When you’ve reached the end of your drive, our team recommends stopping for lunch at Light Wave Cafe in Monte Rio. Situated right along the river, and in the midst of ancient redwoods, Light Wave offers some totally tubular cafe fare like coconut curries, shakshuka, and some of the best pies in the county. Adjacent to a skate park, take your fare to enjoy on one of their outdoor picnic tables as you bask in the scenic riverfront view, or watch a few awesome skateboarders as they ollie-flip off their morning caffeine buzz.

These hidden gems in Sonoma County showcase the region's counterculture heritage and agricultural bounty, providing visitors with authentic experiences that go far beyond typical tourist attractions. The Bohemian Highway journey offers a perfect day trip that combines artisanal food, local crafts, and the natural beauty that makes this area so special.
